  • Huge Herds: Expect exceptional views of large numbers of Elephants, Cape buffalo, Wildebeest, Zebras, and Gazelles.

  • The Best Time to Visit: The prime viewing window is between June to October, which coincides with the massive migration event.

2. The Great Wildebeest Migration

The Mara is one of only two locations on the planet to host this staggering periodic wildebeest migration, one of the most amazing wildlife experiences in the world.

  • The Spectacle: Annually, over 1.5 million wildebeest (alongside Zebras and Gazelles) migrate in a huge circular swing from Tanzania to Kenya in search of lush grazing areas.

3. A Birdwatcher’s Paradise

The Maasai Mara National Reserve offers one of the most breathtaking destinations for birdwatching safaris in the wild:

  • High Species Count: The reserve has recorded over 470 species of birds.

  • Birds of Prey: This count includes a spectacular 46 distinct birds of prey, ranging from the immense Martial Eagle (Africa’s largest eagle) down to the tiny Pygmy Falcon.

  • Cultural Heritage: The reserve is home to the famous Maasai tribesmen, Africa’s most celebrated tribe, adding rich cultural and historic Maasai traditions to your safari experience.

In essence, the Maasai Mara is the most visited game reserve in Africa because it perfectly blends spectacular phenomenal wildlife, dramatic natural events, and stunning landscapes, solidifying its status as a leading safari destination.

Maasai Mara Game Reserve Itinerary

Welcome to Kenya! We will depart Nairobi city in the early morning to the tranquil  Maasai Mara Reserve with a brief stopover at the visitor center in the Great Rift Valley, will spend a few minutes at the viewpoint, and take photos. The Great Rift Valley is one of the wonders of the world, stretching from Syria, down through Africa, stretching as far as Mozambique. The spellbinding views are beyond belief. Proceed to Maasai Mara Reserve via Narok town driving through the endless savannah plains dotted with acacias, arrive shortly after noon and check into your lodge/camp, have a hot lunch. Later an afternoon game drive, starting from 4 o’clock when the sun is not hot, and the wildlife is active. Maasai Mara Game Reserve is a year-round excellent wildlife viewing, for birdwatchers the Mara ecosystem has over 500 bird species, and you are bound to see many special feathered friends on the tour, such as the splendid Martial Eagle, Kori Bustard, Bateleur Eagle, Southern Ground Hornbill, Wattled Lapwing, Bare-faced Go-away-bird, Tawny Eagle, Lappet-faced Vulture, Saddle-billed Stork, Coqui Francolin, Magpie Shrike, African Quail Finch, Lilac-breasted Roller, African Marsh Harrier, Woolly-necked Stork, Melodious Lark, Black-backed Cisticola, Karamoja Apalis

DAY 2:MAASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE

Early morning breakfast followed by a full day of game drives within the reserve.  Journeying into Maasai Mara Game Reserve our jaws will drop at the number of different mammals in the vast plains. There is no shortage of magical scenes in Maasai Mara which is famous for its black mane lions and the annual wildebeest migration which normally happens between the months of July and October. Maasai Mara provides unprecedented game-viewing opportunities. This is probably one of Kenya’s most visited reserves, with an astonishing mass of animals including the big five and other arrays of plain wildlife. The Mara River cuts through the Mara and Serengeti ecosystems giving life to both reserves before finally pouring out into Lake Victoria. The most notable is the wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle instinct led to the migration from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Mara in Kenya, which happens every year, between the months of July and October. Every year, over two million wildebeest, zebra, and other herbivores move from the southern Serengeti to the flourishing green grasses of the Maasai Mara. The Migration is known as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the great migration is a historic compelling safari. The herds travel 800 kilometers clockwise in a circle through the Serengeti and Maasai Mara ecosystems in search of greener, mineral-rich pastures and water. The animals spend most of the cycle in the Serengeti in Tanzania but also spend several months feeding in the immense plains of the Maasai Mara. This journey is coupled with various impediments which makes it even more magnificent. You will have a picnic lunch and continue with the game drives arriving at the lodge in the evening for a well-deserved rest and a hot relaxing shower.
