The 3-day birding tour in Amboseli explores a variety of habitats within a rich and exceptionally promising biosphere. Amboseli is one of the best places in Africa to view large herds of savannah elephants, all framed by superb, unobstructed views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak.

Weather and Conditions

Climate: The park is generally hot and dry, and the open plains can become very dusty, especially during the dry season (June to October and January to February).
Dusty Plains: Expect the iconic sight of elephants moving through the dusty, golden-brown plains.
Green Season (November–May): If you visit during the short or long rains, the plains become lush and green, which is better for photography and bird migration, though roads can be muddy.

3 Days Birding Kenya Budget Tour Itinerary

DAY 1: Nairobi- Amboseli National Park

The birding tour starts early with a departure from Nairobi, heading southeast toward Amboseli National Park. We will use the Iremito Gate to access the park; the entire stretch from the highway to the gate is a birding hotspot. We will make several birding stops along the road.

Upon arrival at our lodge, we will enjoy lunch before heading out for an afternoon birding session inside the park. Amboseli is one of Kenya’s top birding destinations, hosting a wide variety of species along with spectacular wildlife. Be sure to watch for the large herds of Savannah Elephants feeding in the swamps—an iconic Amboseli scene.

DAY 2:Full Day Birding Amboseli National Park

Spend the day birding in Amboseli National Park, a reserve world-renowned for being crowned by the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro—Africa’s highest peak and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. Kilimanjaro has three volcanic cones: Mawenzi, Shira, and Kibo. While Mawenzi and Shira are extinct, Kibo, the highest, remains dormant and could erupt again.

Amboseli’s diverse habitats, from open grasslands to marshes fed by underground springs, create a haven for both birds and wildlife. The marshes attract large numbers of animals, including Elephants, Hippos, Common Ringed Waterbucks, Wildebeests, Burchell’s Zebras, Bohor Reedbucks, Cape Buffalo, Spotted Hyenas, and numerous waterbirds. Birding here offers spectacular opportunities, enhanced by the dramatic backdrop of Kilimanjaro.

DAY 3:Oloitoktok Forest- Nairobi

We begin the day with an early breakfast before setting off for the lush Oloitoktok Forest. Situated dramatically in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, right near the Kenya-Tanzania border, this destination offers a spectacular change of scenery.

Here, we will spend the morning tracking a host of specialized forest birds. Our target list includes the Bar-throated Apalis, the Mbulu White-eye and Kilimanjaro White-eye, and the beautifully colored Emerald Cuckoo.

Other key species we hope to encounter are the Moustached Tinkerbird, the melodious Olive-headed Greenbul, the vibrant Southern Citril, the majestic Hartlaub’s Turaco, the distinctive African Hill Babbler, and the elusive Hildebrandt’s Spurfowl and Ruppell’s Robin Chat. Zanj Sun Squirrel and Mount Kilimanjaro Guereza will be seen feeding up high in the trees. The walk will last for 2-3 hours, and afterwards drive back to Nairobi for your flight back home.
